Mid-State Amusement Company History
MidState Amusement has been Central PA’s leader in amusements and small games of chance for decades.
The originating name of MidState Amusement Company was State Amusement Company, founded by Mr. Randall C. Miller in State College, Pennsylvania in 1962. Mr. Miller operated and directed the growth of his vending and amusement game business from 1962 through 1980 personally servicing the accounts with only a few select employees. A group of those first employees are still employed by both existing companies today.
In 1980 Mr. Millers Company had grown to be recognized as one of Centre Counties most respected and competitive coin machine suppliers and with onset of new video gaming technology, the company experienced a rapid growth pattern and area expansion became a necessity.
In 1979 Mr. Wood presented Mr. Miller with an offer to purchase fifty percent of State Amusement Companies stock, join the company and utilize his background in sales to assist with the development of future growth. On January 1, 1980 a partnership was formed and for the balance of the early 80’s the company upgraded much of its existing equipment, moved to a more conducive working facility and acquired many new accounts. Area acquisitions included purchasing Clearfield County locations from Melillo Amusement Company of Brockway, Pennsylvania, Lowe Brothers Music of DuBois, Pennsylvania which had been in business since the mid 1930’s, and the long established Best Vending Service of Punxsutawney Pennsylvania. In association with these company purchases, State Amusement’s company grew to service the additional central Pennsylvania communities of Philipsburg, Osceola Mills, Houtzdale, Tyrone, Huntingdon, Altoona, Clearfield, Penfield, Ridgeway, St. Mary’s, Johnsonburg, Punxsutawney, Reynoldsville, Brookville, Kittanning and all those communities surrounding or between Lewistown and Clarion Pennsylvania. One hundred employees serviced over five hundred accounts and in excess of four thousand machines. State Amusement became one of central Pennsylvania’s largest vending and amusement companies.
In 1988, Pennsylvania’s legislators legalized the use of small games of chance tickets in Pennsylvania’s service clubs to be effective in 1989. Included with the introduction of this legislation, many grayarea video machine games were declared illegal and to date only the companies in central Pennsylvania has seen policed enforcement banning the use of this equipment. Metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are still operating thousands of these gray area games experiencing only minor selective enforcement still today. “What a Country!” This political action forced State Amusement to restructure the company, sell the acquisition of Best Vending Company, lay off sixty employees and redirect its growth to include becoming a licensed distributor of small games of chance tickets, servicing the local area service clubs. In 1992, to further assist with the continuing financial setback, Mr. Miller and Mr. Wood opted to split their company into equal accounts to better develop account management. Mr. Wood services all locations west of Philipsburg, Pennsylvania and Mr. Miller joined by his two sons, Mike Miller and Brian Miller continue to serve all locations east of Port Matilda, Pennsylvania.
The newly formed western division became known as MidState Amusement Co., Inc. with the main office located in DuBois, Pennsylvania and a satellite warehouse in Clearfield, Pennsylvania.
Since 1992, MidState Amusement Company has been very proud to have introduced the areas first organized Electronic Dart Machine leagues, first modem downloaded jukeboxes, first internet video game machines and first to use a customer revenue accountability system via Silent Partners computer ticketing program.
